Waterways, Conservation & Tourism

A very useful Indonesian word that we will sometimes refer to "Perairan" means a mass of water located in a particular region, regardles of whether it has dynamic characteristics (moving or flowing) like the oceans and rivers or static (contained) like a lake (or dam). "Perairan" includes fresh water (not salty), brackish water, and also salty water (as in oceans). Ref: Wikipedia

"Indonesia is very rich in terms of terrestrial and marine biodiversity, yet so many Indonesians live in poverty, our cities are some of the most polluted in the world, year after year our forests go up in flames, and in the monsoon seasons so many people must suffer the woes of floods and landslides, often fatal." Indonesia proudly hosted the World Ocean Conference 2009 to help build commitment for sustainable management of marine resources

World Ocean Conference The Indonesian World Ocean Conference (WOC) in Manado on the 11-15th of May, 2009 produced a joint declaration acknowledging the crucial role oceans play in international climate change adaptation programs.

The government achieved agreement from t5he participating countries to share technologies as well as information to assist each other with the challenges of climate change.

More than 120 countries attended the conference, one of the largest environmental events of the year.

Almost 5000 delegates including heads of states, senior government officials, experts, observers and NGO activists gathered in the North Sulawesi capital of Manado for the conference, which will be followed by the regional environmental event known as the Coral Triangle Initiative (CTI) Summit.

The CTI Summit will be attended by the heads of the so-called "coral triangle" nations - Indonesia, East Timor, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Solomon Islands.

"We hope that the Manado Ocean Declaration will be incorporated into talks during the 15th UNFCCC Conference of Parties meeting in Copenhagen in December," Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi said in a press conference following a Cabinet meeting on preparations for the WOC and CTI Summit at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.

"Surely we have to work hard in this context, to determine what's next after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. With the Manado Ocean Declaration, we hope that the ocean dimension will play a greater role (in a new agreement) after the Kyoro Protocol," he said.

The main objectives of this website and Perairan.Com are to support and encourage Small-Scale Tourism Industries, Home Industri and a Greater Appreciation of The Wealth of Cultures here In Indonesia. We believe these are the best ways to address Sustainable Conservation and secure the country's Heritage and Future.

We also believe Indonesia's rich cultural heritage, and the development of home industri and our waterways will provide one of the keys to improved national economics and reduced poverty. However, increasing domesitc and international tourist traffic is important.

We support the Visit Indonesia Program, however, our main objective is to ensure that the increased wealth from this tourism will be more widely distributed and assist the welfare of the ordinary citizens, not the owners of star-rated hotels and specific regions.

There are already several regions that are pro-aktif, for instance Sleman who are providing training (diklat) for quality tourist guides and staff.

Professionalism is a very important issue for improving the comfort and security of our visitors because they will be one of our main marketing resources (word of mouth). Another important issue is that we need more Tourism Websites. However, these days creating websites is something that we can do ourselves for free. There are many free Blog hosters and free professional web hosters available, and they also provide templates for the novice.

We believe that one of the best ways to ensure that Indonesians love their oceans and waterways is to increase their role in the everyday lifestyles of the population and their welfare. It is hoped that increased awareness and dependence upon our waterways will lead to increased conservation efforts and consern for our waterways.

With the objective of reducing poverty here in Indonesia, we invite you to join us and participate in our program because we believe that together we can begin to develop strategies for improving the welfare of our citizens living on and around our vast waterways.

Let's Work Together
