Calls for Change of Life Style to Save Environtment

MANADO, KOMPAS.com - An Indonesian environmental affairs figure has called on the people to change their lifestyle and way of doing business to be more friendly to the environment. The impact of global warming is real. The sea level is rising. In view of that we must change our lifestyle and way of doing business to be more environmentally friendly, he said at the opening of an international symposium on sea issues here on Tuesday.
He said 29 islands had vanished because of the rising sea level and he predicted thousands of other islands would also disappear sooner or later. To overcome the rising sea surface which is the result of global warming he said there must be sustainable development in economic, social and technological fields, he said.
In the economic sector, a commitment is needed to ensure that every business undertaking leaves no wastes that could pollute the sea. For that the way of doing business and lifestyle must be changed, he said.
We need to do this and focus on coastal areas. Business entities located on coastal areas must assure that they do not pollute and damage the sea, he said.He said it was also important to preserve mangrove forests and other marine biotas for the sake of the economy and ecology.
We can create various kinds of bio-technology which is environmentally friendly for better living, he said. The former environment minister said to prevent global warming from worsening, carbon emissions must be kept below 450 ppm to prevent the sea surface from rising further.
